Postpartum Meal Prep: Simple Meals That Actually Make the First Weeks Easier
One thing I mentioned in my last post was how much food became a stressor for us postpartum. So instead of just saying I’ll “be more prepared this time”… I actually sat down and thought about what that would realistically look like.
This time, I want to focus on meals that are simple, nourishing, and actually support recovery. Not in a complicated, perfect “wellness” way, but in a way that makes sense for postpartum.
Your body is healing, possibly breastfeeding, running on very little sleep, and still expected to function. So instead of just thinking about “healthy food,” I’m trying to be more intentional about what actually supports that.
Things like protein for healing and rebuilding tissue, iron to replenish what’s lost during birth, healthy fats for hormone balance, and enough calories overall to keep up with breastfeeding and energy demands. Even things like warm, cooked meals instead of cold, random snacks all day just feel more supportive.
That’s also where I really like the Traditional Chinese Medicine approach to postpartum food. Not in a strict way, but the idea of focusing on warm, easy-to-digest meals like soups, broths, slow-cooked dishes, congee, ginger, cooked veggies… it just makes sense to me. It feels grounding and supportive, especially in those early weeks where everything already feels a bit all over the place.
So for freezer meals, I’m thinking things we actually like and will eat.
Chicken teriyaki rice, spaghetti and meatballs, peanut butter chicken, congee, soups, Bolognese, curries, lasagne, chicken soup, beef stew, shepherd’s pie, lentil dhal, chilli con carne, fried rice packs, slow-cooked shredded chicken… and maybe a few breakfast options like oat bakes or muffins.
I don’t want to overcomplicate it. I just want meals that feel comforting, filling, and easy to reheat. Things that give us actual nourishment without needing me to stand in the kitchen trying to make decisions while sleep deprived.
I also want to have ingredients at home for easy, low-effort food when I don’t feel like a full meal.
Fresh veggies for wraps, bread for toasties or sandwiches, eggs, yoghurt, fruit, granola, frozen fruit for smoothies, protein powder for quick smoothies… just simple things I can grab without having to think too much.
And snacks. So many snacks.
If you’re breastfeeding, you are going to be hungry. Like properly hungry. So this time I want to have things ready before I’m starving and emotional at 2pm.
I’ll prep protein balls, have nuts, bars (maybe a mix of lactation and protein bars), fruit, yoghurt… things I can eat one-handed, quickly, without needing to prepare anything.
And hydration is a big one too, but not in a “drink more water” kind of way. More in a actually staying properly hydratedkind of way. Especially if you’re breastfeeding, your body is constantly using fluids, and I noticed last time how much it affected my energy, mood, and even milk supply when I wasn’t on top of it.
So this time I’ll be more intentional with that as well, whether that’s having a water bottle next to me at all times or adding electrolytes in when I need them. I personally love Hydramama — they taste so good and were one of those things that genuinely helped me feel more hydrated. I’ll link them here.
If I’m being honest, I’m not trying to overachieve this.
I’m not going to spend weeks preparing 20 different meals or trying to make everything perfect. That’s just not realistic for me, and I know it would probably stress me out more than it helps.
What I am going to do is keep it simple and intentional. A few solid freezer meals. Easy options at home. Snacks ready to go.
Less thinking. Less pressure. Less “what are we eating today?” conversations when we’re both exhausted.
I think this is one of those things that seems small until you’re in it.
Food.
But when you’re in those early days, running on no sleep, adjusting to everything, trying to take care of yourself and a tiny human… it becomes a lot bigger than you expect.
And if I can take even a small part of that pressure away this time, I will.
Not by doing it perfectly, or having everything figured out, but just by making things a little easier for myself where I can.
A few meals in the freezer. Snacks ready to grab. Less decisions to make. More support in the small things.
It doesn’t need to be perfect… just a little more supportive this time.
Love, Charlie 🤍
